Banarasi vs Kanjivaram vs Patola Saree: What Is the Difference?
November 4, 2026
Banarasi, Kanjivaram and Patola are three of India's best known silk sarees. They look different, feel different and come from different parts of the country. This guide helps you tell them apart.
Banarasi saree
Banarasi sarees come from Varanasi, also called Banaras, in Uttar Pradesh. They are known for rich brocade work, where zari threads are woven into floral and jaal patterns. The designs have a strong Mughal influence, and the fabric usually feels soft with a fine drape.
Kanjivaram saree
Kanjivaram sarees come from Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu. They are usually made of thicker, heavier silk, often with a contrast border and temple inspired motifs. They are a popular choice for weddings, especially in South India.
Patola saree
Patola sarees come from Patan in Gujarat. Their special feature is double ikat, where both the warp and weft threads are dyed in the pattern before weaving. This takes a long time, so a genuine Patola is rare and usually costs more.
How to choose
Choose a Banarasi for festive and wedding wear with fine zari work and a softer drape. Choose a Kanjivaram if you like a heavier silk with a bold border. Choose a Patola if you want a collector's piece with a geometric pattern. Whichever you pick, check the weave on the back of the saree and ask the seller for details about the fabric.
