How to Identify a Genuine Banarasi Silk Saree

October 31, 2026

A Banarasi silk saree is an investment, so it helps to know what to look for before you pay. These simple checks work whether you are buying online or in a shop.

Look at the weave and the back of the saree

In a well made Banarasi saree the motifs are woven into the fabric, not printed or stuck on top. Turn the saree over and check the back. You will usually see the pattern repeated, often with small floating threads between motifs, and the back should still look neat.

A flat printed design with a plain back is a sign that the motif is not woven.

Check the zari

Zari is the shiny metallic thread used for borders and motifs. Good zari has an even shine, sits firmly in the weave and does not flake. Be careful with very bright, plastic looking gold, which often means a cheaper synthetic thread.

Ask the seller whether the zari is real, tested or imitation, and expect the price to reflect the answer.

Feel the fabric and the weight

Silk feels smooth and slightly cool, and it drapes softly. A heavy brocade saree will feel weighty, but the weight should come from the weaving and the zari, not from stiffness. If the fabric feels rough, very slippery or crackly, ask what it is made of.

Look for the Silk Mark

The Silk Mark label is issued under the Silk Mark Organisation of India, supported by the Central Silk Board, to show that a product is made of pure silk. Ask whether the saree carries it.

A label is not a guarantee on its own, so also check the seller reputation and the return policy.

Be realistic about the price

Heavy hand woven Banarasi sarees with real zari are expensive because they take days or weeks to weave. A very low price for a heavily worked saree usually means a power loom piece, a blend or imitation zari. Power loom and blended sarees are not bad, but they should be described honestly.

Buy from a seller who tells you the details

Ask for clear photos in daylight, the fabric details, the blouse details and the return policy. At Suparshva Silk, damaged or incorrect sarees can be returned for a refund or replacement within 48 hours of delivery, and every saree ships free across India.
