How to Care for a Silk Saree

October 31, 2026

A good silk saree can last for many years if you handle it with a little care. These simple habits make the biggest difference.

Cleaning

Dry clean heavy silk sarees, especially those with zari or embroidery. For light silk, follow the care label. If it allows hand washing, use cold water and a mild liquid detergent made for delicates, do not wring or scrub, and dry it in the shade, never in direct sun.

Perfume and sweat

Apply perfume before you drape the saree, not after, because perfume and sweat can stain silk and dull the zari. After wearing, air the saree for a few hours before you fold it.

Ironing

Iron on a low or silk setting, on the reverse side, with a thin cloth in between. Avoid pressing directly on zari or embroidery.

Storage

Wrap each saree in a soft cotton or muslin cloth and keep it away from damp, sunlight and direct contact with mothballs. Store zari sarees separately so they do not rub against other fabrics.

Fold it differently now and then

If a saree stays in the same folds for months, the fabric can wear along the creases. Refold it in different places every few months.
